2 The Death of Jesus Part 1 John 19:17-27

3 A review from last week The religious leaders were afraid of Jesus.
Pilate was afraid of the religious leaders. Jesus isn’t afraid of anyone. When people are squeezed we see what is really inside of them. Power and authority reveal the heart. What (or who) do we place our allegiance in?

4 A look at this week The religious leaders have a plan that will ultimately fail and they are losing control. Pilate has a plan that has failed and is also failing at trying to be in control. Jesus has everything going according to His plan and He is totally in control. The Lord has made everything for His own purpose; even the wicked for the day of evil. Proverbs 16:4

5 John 19:17-18 They took Jesus therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side and Jesus in between.

6 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the booty with the strong; because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors Isaiah 53:12

7 “The Lord has made everything for His own purpose;
even the wicked for the day of evil.” Jesus is the Lord God…He has a purpose …and He is totally in control.

8 “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.’
John 19:19-20 And Pilate wrote an inscription also, and put it on the cross. And it was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.’ Therefore this inscription many of the Jews read, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek.

9 John 19:21-22 And so the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

10 = “The Lord has made everything for His own purpose;
even the wicked for the day of evil.” Jesus is the Lord God…He has a purpose …and He is totally in control.

11 John 19:23-24 The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. They said therefore to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS.”

12 Odds of a perfect NCAA bracket? 1 in 2.3 x 108
Jonathan Mattingly, Duke math prof. Odds of one man fulfilling the OT messianic prophecies? 8 prophecies: 1 in 1017 48 prophecies: 1 in 10157 There are over 300 OT prophecies concerning the Messiah that Jesus fulfilled!

13 “The Lord has made everything for His own purpose;
even the wicked for the day of evil.” Jesus is the Lord God…He has a purpose …and He is totally in control.

14 John 19:25-27 Therefore the soldiers did these things. But there were standing by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
