1 Diffusion & Osmosis Pre-lab
Color Challenge!

2 Color Challenge – The Problem
I made 5 colorful sucrose solutions, but I forgot to label them—OH NO! The concentrations are: M, 0.3M, 0.6M, 0.9M, and 1.2M In groups, your challenge is to determine (through experimentation) which color solutions are which concentrations! You will have to give your answer to the problem and support it with your data.

3 Your Available Materials
Dialysis tubing (semipermeable) Allows water to move through Does not allow sucrose to move through Dialysis Clips Glassware (including small beakers) Graduated cylinders/graduated pipets Colored sucrose solutions Your group will be allotted approximately 10mL of each color solution – plan accordingly! Electronic balances Water (from the sinks)

4 Assessment At the end of one block (50 min), your lab group must turn in a solution sheet. On this sheet, you must clearly state: What concentrations you have determined for each different color sucrose solution How your group’s data supports your answer to the color challenge (data = evidence!) This solution sheet will be counted as a LAB grade on first quarter

5 Lab Questions – For NB Write Up
Design an experiment to solve this same problem using pieces of raw potato (living plant cells) instead of dialysis tubing Hint: the osmolarity of living potato cells is approximately 0.3M How would the results of your experiment be different if you had put WATER inside the dialysis tubing instead of the sucrose solutions? What is the water potential (psi value) of the red sucrose solution in an open beaker at 22 degrees Celsius? Lab Notebooks will be checked at Midterm for completion of all labs.
