1 Action, Linking, and Helping
Verbs Action, Linking, and Helping

2 What is a verb? A verb is a word that is used to show action, condition, or state of being. The two main types of verbs are action and linking. (Refer to the list of linking verbs at the bottom of P. 92) Action: The roller coaster climbs up a hill. Some people hate amusement parks. Linking: The cyclone is a roller coaster. Its name sounds dangerous.

3 Helping Verbs/Verb Phrases
Helping verbs help main verbs express precise shades of meaning. The combination of one or more helping verbs with a main verb is called a verb phrase. (Refer to the list of helping verbs at the bottom of P. 93) Verb phrases are considered action verbs. Ex. Many people will ride the cyclone this weekend. I should have ridden Dejavu at Six Flags. The tickets must have been given to my friend.
