4 Magna Carta 1215 is one of the most famous documents in the world. Originally issued by King John of England (r ) as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215, Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law.

5 New England Confederation is formed.
1643 New England Confederation is formed. Short-lived military alliance for defense against Native Americans.

6 English Bill of rights 1689 The English Bill of Rights is an act that the Parliament of England passed on December 16, The Bill creates separation of powers, limits the powers of the king and queen, enhances the democratic election and bolsters freedom of speech. Parliament given right to free speech and free elections Prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.

7 Enlightenment/ Philosophers 1600’s
Hobbes- Social contract, strong sovereign Locke- Social contract, government protects life, liberty, property. If not, overthrow them! Rousseau- Social contract, consent of the governed. “reciprocal commitment” Montesquieu-separation of powers/checks and balances Volatire-freedom of religion and speech.

8 Albany Plan of Union is proposed.
1754 Albany Plan of Union is proposed. Centralized government Proposed by Ben Franklin. 1st proposal to conceive as colonies as a collective unit.

9 Stamp Act is passed and Stamp Act Congress is convened.
1765 Stamp Act is passed and Stamp Act Congress is convened. Parliament requires tax stamp on legal documents and newspapers.

10 1770, March 5 Boston Massacre Five Americans killed by British troops firing into a crowd of protesters.

11 Committees of Correspondence are first organized.
1772 Committees of Correspondence are first organized. Shadow government set up by Patriot leaders on eve of American Revolution. To respond to Parliament.

12 1773, December 16 Boston Tea Party
Colonists board British ships and dump cargo overboard.

13 1774, Spring Parliament passes the “Intolerable” Acts.
Parliaments passed to punish colonial rebelliousness. Many late night meetings are held at the City Tavern in Philadelphia. Cool place to eat!

14 1774, September 5 First Continental Congress convenes in response to “intolerable acts”. 12 of the 13 colonies met at Carpenter’s Hall to air their grievances against the British King. Let’s look at a picture of Carpenter’s Hall.

15 1775, April 19 Revolution Begins at Lexington & Concord.

16 1775, May 10 Second Continental Congress convenes in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall.

17 1776, June 7 Richard Henry Lee proposes U.S. Independence.

18 1776, July 2 Congress passes Lee’s independence resolution.
Here is the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chamber, next to Independence Hall.

19 1776, July 4 Declaration of Independence is adopted.
