By SOSU/BU and LUCHA

2 Definitions Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of another culture. Cultural appropriation is seen by some as controversial, notably when elements of a minority culture are used by members of the cultural majority; this is seen as wrongfully oppressing the minority culture or stripping it of its group identity and intellectual property rights. Left side definition is from Google. Right side definition is from Wikipedia, and further definitions of cultural appropriation can be found on the Wikipedia citation page.

A lot of the examples seen in the states originate from Mexican culture and style. Our neighbor country seems to get the most flack. The Hilary Campaign was making attempts at appealing to Latino youth, but many felt it an insult to their intelligence and that an American born citizen and white woman wouldn’t be able to connect directly with their abuelas.

It’s a national holiday in Mexico that commemorates in both festive and somber styles. The sugar skulls are a symbol of beauty in death. Also celebrated by: Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Guatemala. Cinco De Mayo – 5th of May is a commemorative war holiday (for one successful battle). It’s celebrated as a drunken festival in states more than it is even celebrated in Mexico. It is NOT Mexico’s Independence Day (Sept. 16) Chola/os Style – Originating around the 20s/30s as reaction to the Mexican Repatriation, the US government forcibly removing around 2 million people of Mexican heritage from the country—more than 1.2 million of them United States citizens.
