1. What type of government does the United States operate under? 2. What are the three branches of the US Government? 3. Why do we have three branches of government? 4. Define separation of power, checks and balances and veto.

2 Day One Answers Democracy or Republic
Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Because of the British monarchy the colonists didn’t want one person to have absolute control of the government. We have a strong central government, with a balance of power.

3 Definitions Separation of Powers – each branch operates independently of the others. Check and balances – a system that prevents a tyrannous concentration of power in any one branch for the protection of citizens Veto - the power one department or branch of government has to forbid or prohibit the carrying out of projects attempted by another department

4 Day Two What does the word democracy mean?
Who is our current Secretary of Education (yesterday in Channel One). Who is the newest Supreme court judge? (also Channel One.) What is another name for the Legislative Branch? What is the Legislative Branch made of? *What country does Democracy originate from?

Congress The Senate and the House of Representatives.

6 Day 3 What is the job of Congress?
How does a person become a member of Congress? Name 6 things that fall under legislative powers. What are two things Congress has the power to do, but they rarely use these powers? How long is a Congress and when does a new one start?

7 Day 3 Answers To write, debate and pass bills(laws).
He or she is elected to Congress. Coining money, maintaining a military, declaring war, regulating interstate and foreign commerce, control federal taxing and spending policies Impeach an official and amend the Constitution Congress is two years and starts in January following congressional elections

8 Day 4 What is the number of members in the House of Representative members based on? How many total members of the House of Representatives are there? How long is a House of Representative’s term? What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? What are their special powers? *Name the NC Senator and Members of the House of Representatives.

9 Day 4 Answers Population of the state 435 Two years
25 years old, US citizen for 7 years and a resident of the state in which they are elected. Start laws that make people pay taxes and decide if a government official should be put on trial if he/she commits a crime against the country (they start the impeachment process)

10 Day 4 Questions What is the number of members of the Senate based on?
Who is the head of the Senate? How long is a senator’s term? What are the requirements to be a senator? What are the special powers of the senate?

11 Day 4 Answers Equal representation The Vice President 6 years
30 years old, citizen for 9 years, and a resident of the state in which he/she is elected. Approve treaties the president makes, approve presidential recommendations, hold trial for a government official who commits a crime against the country.
