4 Location on the Meyrin site
Existing building 174 will be demolished during the first months of 2012

TE-VSC (surface finishing) >> further detail from Leonel

6 Design Status Design started in April 2011 and is carried out in 3 phases by an external consultant (Royal Haskoning) on contract S147/TE: Phase 1 - Preliminary design, indicating the main design choices, has been completed. Phase 2 - Tender design, with sufficient detail to tender for the construction contract, is ongoing and should be finished by February 2012. Phase 3 – Construction design, with all required detail for the construction, will be finished by early April 2012. Royal Haskoning will subsequently supervise the construction of the building from July 2012 until November 2013.

7 Design novelties Parking on the roof to partially compensate the loss of parking places. Electrical transformer on the roof to reduce the footprint of the building (and for aesthetic reasons). Not a novelty at CERN but worth mentioning: Part of the roof surface is pre-equipped with anchoring points for solar panels (on the request of CERN’s Mr. Energy, H. Burckhart).

8 Design issues As a general rule, CERN applies the most stringent of Swiss and French legislation. (e.g. emissions to conform to a mix of French and Swiss values) Consultant has difficulty with the large amount of rules and regulations CERN supplies and installs certain items

9 CERN supplied items Supplied and installed by contractor (following negotiation with the concerned CERN services): Lift IT cabling Supplied and installed by CERN: Electrical transformers and HV connection to 15 kV sub-station Overhead cranes Fire detectors Fiberoptic cable and star points Programming of HVAC PLC’s

10 HVAC impression Separate extraction systems: - acid/alkaline/chrome
- cyanide - solvents - ozone

11 Planning Based on discussions with all potential general contracting firms (6) and sub-contractors for the surface finishing equipment (2), the completion on 30 November 2013 seems feasible.

12 Construction site July 2012 until November 2013

13 Conclusion Design is subject to very stringent legislation (CERN+CH+FR). Invitation to tender for construction in February 2012. A number of general contractors (6) and sub-contractors for the surface finishing equipment (2) have been qualified for the invitation to tender. Construction is scheduled to start in July 2012. Completion on 30 November 2013 appears feasible.
