3 Class discussion- Synthesis & plagiarism
What is an academic conversation? How/where do we show our relation to other author’s texts in synthesis writing? What are the three methods we can use to integrate sources into our writing? What are the three ways we can cite a source or give credit to an author? What is plagiarism? Is it possible to accidentally plagiarize? When and how often do we need citations in research writing? What is the smallest possible unit from a source that could be considered plagiarism?

4 Avoiding plagiarism Make sure to use quotations whenever you use 2 or more words in succession from a source You must give a citation when using any data or numbers Even if you are paraphrasing or summarizing, you must give an in-text citation or attributive tag for your source Vary between attributive tags and in-text citations to avoid repetition If you are ever unsure about whether to cite something, cite it! The penalties for over-citation are ALWAYS less than the penalties for plagiarism

6 Group activity – avoiding plagiarism
In groups of 4-5 students Read “Is vegetarianism healthier than nonvegetarianism?” on page 496 and compare to Writer 3 on p. 497 and Writer 4 on p. 512 How is writer 4 plagiarizing but writer 3 is not? Give 2+ specific examples from each source. Writer 4’s plagiarism is likely accidental and they might respond, “I cited my source. How did I plagiarize?” How would you explain to writer 4 that they have plagiarized?

7 Group Activity: Synthesis Peer Review
In groups of 2-3 students based on the topics you have working on, answer the following questions about every group members’ first draft: Does the essay’s introduction grab the readers’ interest with its hook? What kind of strategy does it use to do this? What is the writer’s thesis? Take this word for word from the essay you analyze. Does this thesis satisfy the criteria we discussed last class or does it need further revision? What elements does the essay forecast for the body paragraphs? Are these based on supporting points or on the sources themselves? Does the essay seem more formal or informal? Find one example quote to illustrate this. What are some example transition words used in the essay? How does the essay transition into its summary section?
