Spelling Unit 14 Latin Suffixes ible/able

2 ible/able -able and –ible are both suffixes that mean “able to be”. These suffixes can be added to a word or to a root to form an adjective. Add –ible or-able when: If the root word is not a complete word, add -ible If the root word is a complete word, add –able.

3 When to drop the silent e
A final silent e is usually dropped when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel. Store to storage Bike to biking Cute to cutest Write to writer Reuse to reusable Navigate to navigable

4 Exceptions Words that end with –ce, –ge or -ee Notice – noticeable
Agree – agreeable Knowledge - knowledgeable

5 Spelling Activity Using effective context clues, compose 15 sentences using one spelling word in each. Each sentence must have the spelling word underlined as well as the meaning of the word as evidence that an effective context sentence has been written.
