The ancient Maya of Central America used specialized agricultural techniques to maximize their corn crops. Because the Maya lived in a tropical area with karst topography, most of the soil naturally eroded into depressions. The Maya intensively planted in these locations. The soil was ideal because it was the richest topsoil and all the surface water drained into the depressions.
