Carers Issues

2 LD Partnership Board 8th May 2017
Recent activity Well – attended event (more than 30 carers) about writing wills ….. what a parent of somebody with a learning disability needs to take into account when writing their will, and whether somebody with a learning disability can write their own will

The future of this Board Discussion about what should happen if the letter to ask for a new senior manager to chair the Board wasn’t successful. Would there be any purpose in attending meetings to present issues that nobody there could do anything about ?

4 LD Partnership Board 8th May 2017
Issues when organisations change, or key people move on How do you know who to contact, and who is now responsible for what ? (Organisational charts would need to change every month at the moment….) As each Service redefines what it is there to do, that creates gaps in what is available. Who is supposed to fill those gaps ?

5 LD Partnership Board 8th May 2017
Annual mental health checks It has been recommended by NICE that everyone with a learning disability should have a mental health check carried out every year, alongside their physical health check. Who will take responsibility to do these ?

6 LD Partnership Board 8th May 2017
Person-led assessment form When the Care Act came into place it was accepted that the forms being used to assess people’s needs were not up to the job. They needed to be changed. A group of carers and social workers put a lot of effort into making the form ‘fit for purpose’. That work was finished over 12 months ago. The old form is still in use. Will carers want to volunteer for tasks like this in future if nothing changes afterwards?

Finally, an issue that never goes away Continuity…why do we usually end up with somebody we have never met before when we make contact with the social work team for a new matter, with the need to tell our story all over again from the start ? Couldn’t social workers keep people on their caseloads who are not needing attention at the moment, but who they will attend to if a new request for support comes in ?
