6 The Feudal System

7 Changes in Europe Growth of trade and towns weakened the feudal system. Bubonic plague beginning in killed thousands of serfs, or workers. As feudal lords lost power, kings grew stronger.

8 The Renaissance and Reformation
Reformation – movement to correct problems in the church. Ultimately led to a split in Roman Catholic Church – Catholics and Protestants Renaissance – a time of increased interest in art and learning. Led to a desire to explore and expand.

9 Changes in trade European demand for Asian goods increases after Crusades Italy dominates trade due to network developed during Crusades. Other European nations want share of Italian trade profits. Other nations seek water route to Asia.
