1 Top Secret September 18th 2012

2 Preface You are about to view the short cuts to the Periodic Table. You will be asked to code your periodic table so you can use your secrets in the future.

3 3 Main Types of Element Metals Non Metals Metalloids
Most abundant (the most on the table) Shiny, good conductors of heat & electricity, malleable, ductile Non Metals Mostly gases Opposite of metals: brittle, dull, poor conductors of heat & electricity Metalloids Least abundant A combo of metals and non-metals

4 Color code your Table:

5 Atomic Number: Protons & Electrons
In a neutral atom, protons and electrons are the same Think APE: Atomic Number is the same as Protons and Electrons

6 Atomic Mass: Neutron Secret Exposed!
Comes from the protons and neutrons together Calculate Neutrons: Atomic Mass – Atomic Number = Neutrons

7 Group Number: Columns & Valence e-
Sick of trying to count those annoying little electrons in that outer later? Just look at the group number! Group # = Valence e- Watch out: you have to skip from Group 2 to Group 13 for it to work! Restart here! Ignore 3 – 12 for now! They’re cray-zay!

8 Period Number: Rows & Energy Levels
Counting those energy levels giving you headaches? Period Numbers = How many energy levels total in the atom. Look at sodium: 3 energy levels. Same with Sulfur! They are both in row 3

9 All of row 4! Even though is starts down below, it is ALL row 4!
Periods Continued… Ni is in Period 4, NOT Period 1! Common Mistake Alert: All of row 4! Even though is starts down below, it is ALL row 4!

10 How can I keep Groups & Periods Straight?!
Insider Tips: Periods: When you write a sentence you end it with a period. You write left to right (horizontal) Periods are horizontal! Groups: You can see the word “up” in the word group Groups go UP and down like columns.

11 Left to Right = Reactive to NonReactive
Reactivity goes from left to right Super Duper reactive elements are in Group 1 on the left Very Unreactive (stable) elements are on the far right in Group 18 Noble Gases: Group 18 Outer orbital is full (remember, group 18 = 8 valence electrons!) Helium is also here…remember the exception to the rule!
