2 A) Religious Freedom

3 The New England Colonies
The New England Colonies of British America included the Connecticut Colony, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Province of New Hampshire. They were part of the Thirteen Colonies.

4 Anglican Church Many in England were unhappy with the Anglican Church and wanted to come to America to get away from its teachings.

5 Puritans = Reform the Church

6 Separatists = Separate from the Church

7 The Bible = The Law

8 “Mayflower” In 1620, a group of Separatists called Pilgrims planned on going to the Virginia Colony aboard the Mayflower to start a new colony but were blown off course and landed in Plymouth.

9 William Bradford The leader of the Pilgrims was William Bradford. He called for the creation of the Mayflower Compact to govern the new colony since it was outside the boundaries of Virginia. It became one of the first constitutions in America.

11 “Pilgrims” Arrive In Plymouth

12 Struggles in Winter In their first winter, the Pilgrims nearly starved to death.

13 Squanto & Samoset The Pilgrims were saved by Squanto and Samoset who helped them hunt and grow crops. The Native Americans also introduced them to Massasoit, the Wampanoag chief. *Give a man a fish and feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and feed him for life!

15 B) New Settlements

16 “Massachusetts Bay Company”
In 1629, a group of Puritans formed the Massachusetts Bay company and received a royal charter to go to America. They wanted to make a colony based on the law of the Bible.

17 John Winthrop (Massachusetts)
John Winthrop was chosen as the leader and takes over 900 settlers to an area they named Boston.

18 “Great Migration” In the 1630’s, over 15,000 settlers arrived in Massachusetts to escape persecution in England. This was called the Great Migration.

19 “General Court” By 1634, the General Court had been created as an elected assembly. All adult male church members who owned land could vote.

20 Thomas Hooker (Connecticut)
The intolerance of the Puritans for those that did not believe what they did caused other settlers to search for new colonies. In 1636, Thomas Hooker led a small group of settlers to Hartford (in Connecticut) to find better farmland and escape Puritan rule. They created the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut in First written constitution in America.

22 John Wheelright New hampshire
In 1638, John Wheelwright established the colony of New Hampshire which broke off from Massachusetts for religious reasons.

23 Roger Williams (Rhode Island)
In 1644, Roger Williams established the colony of Rhode Island after being banished from Massachusetts. They created a colony where people were free to worship how they wanted.

24 “King Philip’s War” Wars were frequent between colonists and Native Americans in New England. They fought back and forth for 40 years! It finally ended with the defeat of the Native Americans in King Phillip’s War giving the colonists the power to move deeper into Native Territory.
