4 Significance Public hysteria in the US of a Soviet nuclear attack led the US Federal Civil Defense Administration to encourage American citizens to adopt methods of surviving nuclear war in order to alleviate public fear.

Point 1 Left-over radioactive material propelled into the upper atmosphere after a nuclear detonation Trillions of radioactive particles gradually “fall” back to the earth Alpha and proton particles may poison food and water Gamma particles can penetrate almost all matter Too much exposure may lead to cancer and death Soviet possession of atomic bomb created tremendous fear in America "I don't know with what weapons World War 3 will be fought, but World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.  Albert Einstein

8 What was the Federal Civil Defense Administration?
Point 2 Government agency created in 1951 to alleviate public anxiety Developed evacuation plans for people living near probable nuclear targets “Educated” communities and schools conduct air-raid drills “Duck and Cover” FCDA slogan taught to children to keep them safe in the event of an attack There was a turtle by the name of Bert And Bert the Turtle was very alert When danger threatened him he never got hurt He knew just what to do He'd duck and cover, duck and cover He'd hide his head and tail and four little feet He'd duck and cover!

11 Conclusion In order to calm American fear of nuclear war the federal government reassured the public through education and the construction of fallout shelter. Fallout is residual radioactive particles that poison the earth and survivors after the initial blast Federal Civil Defense Administration was created to educate and reassure the public Fallout shelters were fortified shelters portrayed as a realistic way to survive nuclear

Power, Authority, and Leadership One of the primary jobs of our government is to protect its citizens. The Federal Civil Defense Administration’s actions during the Cold War made many Americans feel protected. Similarly, George W. Bush’s administration reacted to the attacks of 9/11 by creating the Department of Homeland Security to make Americans feel safe. Extend this more…….
