1 Anchoring Table: Newton’s 3 Law of Motion Action Reaction
3rd LAW Anchoring Table: Newton’s 3 Law of Motion Action Reaction Unit Physics part 2 Science 8th grade By Zoe Jones

2 Other Example Objects: Dribbling a Basket Ball
Unit: Physics TEACHER VERSION________ Date: Anchors Table 3. Known Information 2. Known Concept Newton’s Third Law Station Lab New Concept Law of Action Reaction Station 1: Marble Investigation Station2: Balloon Investigation Station 3: Skateboard Other Example Objects: Dribbling a Basket Ball Roller Coaster Car Accident Skate Boarding Canoe/ Stand up paddle Play dough 4. Characteristics Station 1 Observations: As one marble is pushed, one marble moves from the other side. As two marbles are pushed, two marbles move on the other side. 3 - 3 4 -4 The action force of one marble will cause a reaction force to move an equally sized marble . 5. Characteristics of New Concept Part 1: For every action force there is an equal reaction force The action force of the air rushing out of the balloon will cause a reaction force of the balloon flying around the room in the opposite direction. Station 2 Observations: There balloon stretches as it is filled with air. The balloon shrinks back to original size as it flies all around because the air is released. Part 2: For every action force there is an opposite reaction force Parts 1 &2 together: For every action force there is an equal & opposite reaction force Station 3: Observations Pushing on the wall causes motion in the opposite direction. The action force against the wall is matched by the reaction force of the wall against the student on the skateboard causing motion in the opposite direction. 7. Understanding of the New Concept: 8.6C Pull a force picture from the envelope and explain how Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion: Action Reaction is applied to the motion in the picture. Make sure to tell the action and reaction force, and use 3-5 key terms: equal, opposite, force, push, speed, velocity, acceleration. Sentence Stem: This is an example of Newton’s third law of motion because… ANCHORS 1. Announce 2. Name 3. Collect 4. Highlight 5. Observe 6. Reveal 7.
