3 Leading Practice Review
Do you have a risk of employees having a Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) > 85 dB(A) as an 8 hour Time Weighted Average (TWA). Do you have a system in place to improve mineworkers’ knowledge of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and awareness of noise as a hazard, as well as improve motivation to comply with healthy and safe work practices. Do you have a system in place to assist in the selection of appropriate Hearing Protection Devices per occupation encountered in the mining industry.

6 1. Technology, process or practice
Educational and Motivational Material A training video programme in English, Xhosa, South Sotho and Zulu for the South African mining industry consisting of two modules: Module 1: Educational/Motivational (15 minutes long), which conveys the message that loud noise is hazardous and illustrates the potential consequences of exposure; Module 2: HPD training (10 minutes long), which reinforces educational and motivational aspects from Module 1 and demonstrates the correct use and care of various types of HPDs Hand-outs for trainees in the form of 16-page, A-5 self-cover booklets illustrating the risks of excessive noise exposure, as well as the correct use and care of HPDs, produced in English and Zulu Four volumes of guidelines for trainers, comprising: A script for induction talks on the noise hazard, with a demonstration of the benefits of using HPDs in noisy areas and their correct use and care, with four supporting overhead transparencies; Use of the training videos, with the scripts for Modules 1 and 2 appended; Use of the hand-out booklet, with a reproduction of the booklet appended; and Suggestions for ways of responding to reasons or excuses commonly given by mineworkers who neglect to use HPDs.

7 And / Or Hearing Protection Device Selection Material
The ability to select frequency-specific data for all noise associated with various occupations, workplaces and machinery in the SA mining industry. The ability to select frequency-specific attenuation data for all currently available HPDs in the SA mining industry.

8 2. Mental Modules One-on-one interviews
A direct inquiry process is followed to assess and determine the Mental Models pertaining to the awareness, educational/training needs, consequences and prevention actions required to prevent NIHL associated with the exposure to noise. Develop Leadership Behaviour programme How must leaders act and not act The Leadership Behaviour Programme is customised for your operation in order to ensure that Leaders behave in a manner that will influence the successful adoption of this technology at your operation Develop Behavioural Communication plans What messages must be communicated that change people’s behaviour and through what means The Behavioural Communications plan is customised for your operation whereby the "issues" identified in the Mental Model is addressed, thereby ensuring that the outcomes lead to the mutual and successful adoption of this technology

9 3. Change Management Risk Assessment
The introduction of the Technology and Behavioural Plans is assessed for any new or introduced risks within your operation and to the safety of equipment and employees, and an action plan is set up to address those risks adequately.

10 4. Training, Development and Application Programmes
A Training and development programme is customised for your operation whereby operational staff and technical staff and persons at risk are trained and skilled in terms of the relevant exposures, procedures and processes pertaining to this Technology.

11 5. Management Review A Management Review frequency programme is established to ensure successful application and KRA's and KRI's are introduced to ensure effective application of controls.

12 6. Roll out, training and application programme.
A programme is developed and installed to control the roll-out of the technology/practice over the identified operational area.
