1 Motion Vocabulary Part 1
Fall 2016

2 Rate A ratio that compares 2 related things. Speed How fast an object changes its position. Velocity Speed with direction.

3 Average Speed (m/s) The rate of change between the distance travelled and the time of travel. s = Total Distance Total Time

4 Different ways you will see the speed equation:
s = displacement/time s = position/time s = Δd/ Δ t s = change in distance/change in time s = final position – initial position final time – initial time

5 Instantaneous Speed The rate of travel at a specific point in time.

6 = Change in Speed Total Time
This is NOT an equation! This is a unit of measurement! Acceleration (m/s2) The rate of change in speed over a specified time. = Change in Speed Total Time

7 Different ways you will see the acceleration equation:
a = speed/time a = velocity/time a = Δs/ Δ t a = change in speed/change in time a = final speed – initial speed final time – initial time

8 Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in its state of motion or rest.

9 Effort Distance Effort Force Electric Motor Inclined Plane Input Work Joule Lever Load Distance Load Force Output Work Power Pulley Screw Simple Machine Speed Watt Wedge Work Please Update your EMM Vocab Glossary in the back of your journal by Friday. You may use your textbook, Sciencesaurus, your notes, or the internet.
