3 What Is Worship? REVERENCING GOD

4 What Is Worship? 1) Primary word used in N.T. defined: “to kiss the hand to (towards) one, in token of reverence; among the Orientals, especially the Persians, to fall upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence; in the NT by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication” (Thayer). This word is used approximately 197 in the Scriptures in some form (worship(s); worshiped, worshiper(s), worshiping, etc.).

5 What Is Worship? Why Worship God? REVERENCING GOD

6 Why Worship God? 1) He is our Creator.
“Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture” (Psalm 100:3). “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:24-25).

7 Why Worship God? 2) He gives to us freely. (a) Physically –
“that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). (b) Spiritually – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

8 Why Worship God? 3) God requires worship.
“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him” (John 4:23). “Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve” (Matthew 4:10). He quotes Deuteronomy 6:13.
