2 Comprehensive Approach
Fuel Up to Play 60: A Comprehensive Approach Get Up and Play 60 Minutes a Day Fuel Up with Nutrient Rich Foods So what is FUTP60? A comprehensive in-school nutrition and physical activity program that motivates and rewards students to make sustainable changes including access to healthier foods – including nutrient-rich foods like low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruit, whole grains, lean meats and vegetables throughout the school campus– and at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. At its core it is …. Designed to engage and motivate youth to take action for their health and help make change in their schools On the nutrition side, the program promotes consuming: fruits/vegetables, whole grains and lowfat/non fat dairy.  From a physical activity standpoint, the program – encourages 60 minutes of exercise each day – Healthier Kids 2

3 Health Partners Business Partners
This is a HUGE program, a comprehensive approach to making the next generation a healthier one, totally unique, and attracting lots of partners NDC partnered with the NFL; which added star power, physical activity programs and the local involvement of all 32 NFL teams Seven health and nutrition organizations (Action For Healthy Kids, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Dietetic Association, National Hispanic Medical Association, National Medical Association, School Nutrition Association) have seen the value and signed on in support; Along with a growing list of business partners, adding their resources to this effort, which makes it bigger, broader and more impactful. On January 15, 2010 the United States Department of Agriculture—the government agency that manages school feeding programs—officially teamed up with National Dairy Council and the NFL as a partner to fight childhood obesity by promoting and expanding the Fuel Up to Play 60 campaign.

4 Fuel Up to Play 60 Goals Students are motivated to make better food choices – such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat and fat-free dairy – and be more physically active before, during and after school Schools have increased access to nutrient-rich foods and sustained opportunities for physical activity Continually improve school environments and school stakeholders are supportive of nutrient-rich foods and physical activity The goals for Fuel Up to Play 60 are straightforward – We want to help improve the school environment and promote healthy food choices and physical activity opportunities Students will not only have access to more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and low-fat and fat-free dairy, but they also will want to select them as their food choices The same goes for physical fitness opportunities and the desire to want to participate in physical activities The support of the school stakeholders is necessary to empower the students to be advocates for changes needed in the school environment 4

5 What Makes Fuel Up to Play 60 Unique?
Massive Reach A Comprehensive Approach Youth Involved Powerful Partners With all the attention around child health, there are many programs available that address the issue. There are six attributes of the Fuel Up To Play 60 program that makes it stand out from other programs. Massive Reach -- Fuel Up to Play 60 is currently in over 70,000 schools nationwide, over 3,000 schools in Illinois Comprehensive Approach --Nutrition is only half the equation that needs to be addressed when focusing on child health; Fuel Up to Play 60 not only includes nutrition, but also physical activity strategies or “plays.” These are both requirements for being recognized as a HealthierUS School, so strategies in Fuel Up to Play 60 can help schools achieve that status Youth Involvement in the Development of the Program --There has been extensive testing of the program with students and adults in the schools that are implementing the program. This information is included in the continuing evolution of the program to make sure it is effective and achieving the desired results. Additionally, students work with adults to motivate their peers to making change within the school. Partner Support – there are seven health and nutrition partners are supporting activation of Fuel Up to Play 60 in schools. Additionally, business and community leaders are getting involved at a national and local level. Customization --Although Fuel Up to Play 60 has reached over 70,000 schools, the flexibility is there for each school to focus on the “plays” that best fit their situation. The program works differently in every school. In addition, we have customized the program with all 32 NFL Teams. National issue, local solutions – Fuel Up to Play 60 recognizes that the issue of childhood obesity is a national problem but the changes can and should start at the local level in communities across the country. Local Dairy Councils are actively reaching out to schools to provide support to schools who activate the program Customization National Issues, Local Solutions
