What are standards?

Perform only those procedures for which you have been trained and are legally permitted to do. Never perform procedure unless qualified Obtain appropriate training Refuse to perform if not properly trained or illegal

Use approved, correct methods while performing any procedure. Follow specific instructions Observe and learn correct/current practices Follow health care agency procedure manual Follow manufacturer’s instructions on equipment

Obtain correct authorization before performing any procedure. From appropriate authority in charge of patient’s care From written orders From immediate supervisor if above not available

Identify patient and obtain patient’s consent before performing any procedure. Check name band State name clearly and repeat if needed Explain procedure and obtain consent Report to immediate supervisor if patient refuses Obtain written consent if required – never sign as witness or document unless authorized to do so

Observe all safety precautions. Handle equipment carefully Be alert to safety and protect patient Know and follow all safety rules and regulations Be alert to safety hazards and correct or eliminate as quickly as possible

Keep all information confidential. Oral and written information Secure records at all times Maintain confidentiality Report information to supervisor discretely Avoid discussion patients anywhere outside of the health care agency

Think before you speak and watch everything you say. Do not tell a patient information unless instructed to do so Revealing unapproved information may cause problems

Treat all patients equally. Regardless of race, religion, social or economic status, sex, and nationality Provide care to all to the best of your ability

Accept no tips or bribes for your service. You receive a salary for your service Care should not be determined according to the amount of money a patient has Polite refusal is usually best way to handle situation

If you error or make a mistake, report it immediately to your supervisor. Never try to hide or ignore a mistake Make every effort to correct situation as soon as possible Take responsibility for your actions

Behave professionally in dress, language, manners and actions Take pride in your job and work Promote a positive attitude

13 Liability Insurance Even though standards are followed, errors can occur and legal action can be taken Form of protection Many agencies offer policies
