2 Nationalism in the Balkans
European competition between Austria Hungary and Russia focused on an area in southeastern Europe: The Balkan Peninsula. The mountainous terrain of this area created distinct, isolated ethnic groups and discouraged any cultural unity. Most of the Balkan ethnicities wanted to be independent of Ottoman or any other rule. This area continues to be wrought with civil wars.

3 Nationalism in the Balkans
In 1908, Austria annexes Bosnia-Herzegovina from the Ottoman Empire. Bosnia was populated by mostly Slavs. Serbia, Austria’s tiny neighbor resented Austrian control. On June 28, 1914, the Archduke and his wife planned to tour Bosnia’s capital city Sarajevo. This date held important factors: Anniversary of Serbia’s loss to the Ottoman Empire in the Battle of Kosovo. It was the Archduke’s 14th wedding anniversary.

4 Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie
Seven members of the Serbian group the Black Hand lined Apple Quay. 19 year old Gavrillo Princip shot the archduke and his wife. He was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. He died of tuberculosis.

6 Austria Hungary’s Ultimatum
Given a blank check of support from Germany, Austria serves Serbia a strict ultimatum. Three parts of the ultimatum were: Demand for the suppression of all anti-Austrian activity. Dismissal of any officials chosen by Austria. Austrian officials to enter Serbia to investigate the crime and carry out suppression of anti-Austrian organizations.
