3 Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network Stroke rehabilitation is the only evidence based treatment for stroke recovery once the initial (72hr or so) medical intervention has ended For those who survive a stroke, the recovery of neurological impairment takes place over a variable time span. About 30% of survivors will be fully independent within 3 weeks, rising to nearly 50% by 6 months

4 Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network London has the opportunity to commission world class stroke rehabilitation and community services The key outcome of stroke rehab is to improve patients quality of life, reduce disability and improve ability to participate in social engagement roles such as being a mum or being a worker

5 Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network Rehabilitation needs to be stroke specialised, seamless and accessible The National Stroke Strategy (particularly life after stroke) provides some key quality markers and the London stroke strategy operationalises these into specific services standards

6 Introduction North East London Cardiovascular and Stroke Network Commissioning quality rehabilitation services are likely to be cost saving to the health economy as care packages will be reduced, reduced secondary complications, increased quality of life and social engagement etc.
