How will you provide students with recognition of their current status and their knowledge gain relative to the learning goal or target?

3. Before we begin…
It is important to keep in mind that this element is directly related to elements 1 and 2. While teachers celebrate student success and progress every day in a wide variety of ways, to experience success with this particular element the teacher must have a clearly written learning goal and scale, and use the scale to track student progress.

6. Desired Effect for Student Learning
Strategies will only produce desired effect when implemented accurately and in the right context. The desired effect for element 3 is “Students feel pride in their knowledge gain and accomplishments, and they are motivated to continue progress toward the goal.” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must adapt and create new strategies for unique student needs and situations in order for the desired effect to be evident in ALL students.

To achieve an Applying rating, how can you recognize student gains in knowledge in correlation to a learning goal and scale and motivate students to increase their level on the scale? Need monitoring ideas? Click here

10. Remember…
Celebrating success is connected to having a clear learning goal and scale while tracking student progress.
Have students rate and track their initial level at the beginning of a unit so you can celebrate knowledge gained throughout the unit.
Specifically explain what a student is doing correctly to be at a given level (use the scale as your guide).
This could be done in a one-on-one conference or the scale could be attached to a written assignment where you can highlight parts of the scale or write specific feedback for the student.

11. It’s Your Evaluation, Make the Most of It!
Your evaluator will only rate you on what he/she sees which is OK because it is not necessary for you to have everything checked in the teacher and/or student evidence to receive a good rating. Also, remember you can invite your evaluator to your classroom to see you using this element. You have control of what your evaluator sees.

12. Is This Element in Your PGP?

Click on the Plans option.
Open your current plan and fill out a new Reflection Log, answering the appropriate questions.
Decide how you will change your teaching as a result of viewing this module.
Execute your change, reflect on its impact, and complete another Reflection Log in iObservation.
