1 Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program Updates

2 MBRS RISE In the early 90’s congress mandated budget allocations for the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program to increase the number of underrepresented (UR) individuals in the biomedical (scientists who study the underlying mechanisms of diseases) workforce to reduce health disparities.

3 MBRS Goal and Objectives
NIH provided federal funding to minority-serving institutions who demonstrated potentially successful strategies for increasing the underrepresentation in the biomedical Workforce with the following outcomes at the institutional level: An increase in the overall number of UR students that complete a Ph.D. and continue biomedical research careers; At least 50 percent of undergraduate (UG) and 75 percent of master’s RISE- supported students will enter into a Ph.D. program within 3 years after graduation; and At least 80 percent of RISE-supported Ph.D. students will complete the degree

5 How did NIH Address this Pitfall
Made NIH grants more assessable to majority schools, which reduced availability to HBCU Change the descriptions of the program to the use of the words “Underrepresented Minorities (URM)” to “Underrepresented (UR)” Change the name of the division of NIGMS at NIH from MORE (Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) to Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity (TWDD) Change the name of the oldest minority support program: Minority Access to Research (MARC) to Maximizing Access to Research. Reduced funding, number of support for students and staff at HBCUs

6 Overview of FSU-RISE The FSU-RISE program is located at Fayetteville State University (FSU), one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina System and the second-oldest historically black public institution of higher education in the state. Since its inception in 2002, FSU-RISE has provided the capacity for more than 136 Pre-RISE and RISE scholars to gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences to complete the undergraduate degree and transition into the science workforce or advanced degree biomedical programs. Eligibility: Biology and chemistry majors, who are interested in pursuing Ph.D.s after graduating from FSU. Students interested in health-related fields (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, etc.) may only participate in FSU-RISE if they plan to pursue a dual research degree (ie MD-Ph.D., Pharm.D.- Ph.D.) We are currently in the last year of funding of the third (four-year) cycle.
