1 Unit 6.07: Design skills Computer aided design (CAD)
Computer aided design and drafting (CADD) CADD systems are CAD systems with additional drafting capabilities.

2 Computer Aided Design (CAD)

3 Advantages of CAD Designs can be very detailed and accurate
Distances and angles can be automatically measured (Dimensioning) Changes can be made without having to start from scratch

4 Advantages of CAD 3D images can be made and tested on screen without having to build a prototype. This saves time, effort and money. CAD system show- computer simulation

5 What is required for CAD?
High specification computer CAD software Graphics tablet for input that enables a user to hand-draw images and graphics- computer input device Plotter for output-The plotter is a computer for printing graphics, designs, etc. vector graphics

6 Who uses CAD Architects Engineers Interior Designers Car designers
Town planners Kitchen Planners The list is endless ………………….

Teachers’ notes: Introduce this presentation by reflecting on the variety of drawing and graphic techniques the students have seen previously. Invite students to come up with reasons why architects make use of ICT and CAD. (Answers such as: easier to make changes, speed of sharing information etc) Inspired by Design

Architects often study their initial concepts on CAD, especially if the structure is a unique form and drawing by hand would be complicated. Inspired by Design

Architects use CAD to develop design concepts and to refine their design ideas. Inspired by Design

Teachers’ notes: this would be a good place to introduce scale and point out that architects have to draw smaller than reality, whilst keeping the proportions of the design correct. CAD software is used to produce construction and detail drawings which explain the arrangement of the building. Inspired by Design

Working on CAD, architects can carry out structural analysis with engineers and other consultants on a project. Inspired by Design

12 Rendered 3D visualisations of a building’s interior can help clients understand how the spaces will look and feel. Inspired by Design

13 Computer generated 3D models and renders help communicate the architects’ ideas to built reality. The greatest advantages of virtual reality of computer aided design is to be able to “walk” through the house and see its finished appearance before any construction begins. Teachers’ notes: this image shows how the Aquatics Centre will look after the 2012 Games – discuss the differences with your students. Including context such as neighbouring buildings, trees and people helps communicate how a new building will look. Inspired by Design

15 3D Home Architect 3D Home Architect is a designing program.
Does not have Furniture. Orthographic… Orthographic projection (or orthogonal projection) is a means of representing a three dimensional object into a two dimensions. In a software “3D Home architecture” to get an orthographic view of a structure go to a 3D overview. two dimensions.
