Does “Ancient Greece” refer to just one country or Civilization? NO! City-states An independent town / city that governs itself and land around it Called a “Polis” Ancient Greece was a collection of city-states Sometimes they worked together Like High School Musical… only without the crappy songs

4 LESBOS MARATHON MILOS

What if the groups DON’T get along?

6 Ancient Greece Forms of government…. WHY band together?
Protection Outsiders “barbarians” Power Can take other areas HOW do we band together? We need rules, and someone needs to be in charge… Forms of government…. These are NOT all-inclusive, and may look different than in a Government Class

7 Forms of Government Tyranny Aristocracy One person “seizes” the power
Illegally / or with force Aristocracy “rule of the best” Power held by nobles Could be a LARGE group Passed down from parents to child

8 Democracy Forms of Government Oligarchy “rule of the few”
A small group has the power Usually wealthy men Later on this will be a few leaders Democracy “rule of the many” People can vote Majority rule

9 Forms of Government So…. Is the United States a Democracy?
Do we have “majority” rule? Do we get to vote? Does the leader have to do what we say? Maybe we have something else…. But we will wait and talk about this when we get to the Romans!

10 Rivalries! Athens vs. Sparta!

11 Athens Democracy They had an Assembly that made decisions
The Assembly could ostracize people Banish, or send away 500 members chosen randomly by lot In theory, every citizen serves a term Do we have anything like that today? Laws / Juries Public Education Citizenship (4 requirements) 1) male 4) two Athenian parents 2) at least 18 3) not a slave

12 Athens Pericles Athens’ most famous General Successful in war

13 Athens Parthenon One of Pericles’ most famous projects

Two Kings! Military Culture In Athens you served 2 years in the military, but in Sparta, you served 23! Patriotic Women can vote!

16 Athens v. Sparta Sometimes there would be a truce
Agreement where 2 or more people agree to stop fighting One example was every 4 years…. OLYMPIC GAMES! “sports” competition between Ancient City-States All the City-States were invited, but Athens and Sparta seemed to have the biggest rivalry, and most medals Some of the original events: Discus, Wrestling, long jump, javelin, 200 yard race

18 Athens v. Sparta Coming Soon: The Persian Wars
Other than the games though, what happens when there’s no “one” leader, or central government? Fights, wars, etc. And what if an outsider decides to try to conquer you all? UNITE AND FIGHT! Coming Soon: The Persian Wars
