10 Conclusion The Election of 1968 was one of importance. The first big component of the election was the Chicago Democratic Convention which turned into a huge riot between demonstrators and the Chicago police department. The convention still went on, however, and Humphrey became the democratic nominee. Richard Nixon won the election to become president, beating Humphrey by less than 1%. George Wallace also ran as a 3rd party nominee, but lost much of his popularity due to his running-mate, Curtis LeMay.
