1 Chapter 10 – Beyond the Mississippi.
Pages Native Americans on the Great Plains. Expanding west into Hispanic N. America. Moving west over the Oregon Trail. Conquest of a continent complete.

2 Lewis and Clark Before Thomas Jefferson even buys the Louisiana Purchase he begins plans to sends out Lewis and Clark to gather information on the land. Lewis and Clark Video. Journey takes them all the way to the Pacific Ocean and back, takes two years. This is the lands that America will eventually want for themselves. This land is controlled by French, Native Americans, and Spanish/Mexicans.

4 Native Americans on the Great Plains
Native Americans had already been effected by white settlers. Horse transformed N.A. lifestyle. Some become nomads and follow buffalo herds. White settlers moving west will change their lifestyle again.

5 Hispanic N. America Spain has held what is now South West United States. Their grip on the land is weakening. In 1821 Mexico wins it independence from the Spanish. Mexico includes what is now Texas, New Mexico, and California. This leads to a huge increase in trade with America.

6 Mexican Independence Encourage trade with America.
America has high quality goods that are cheap. By the 1830’s caravans of wagons are traveling from Missouri to New Mexico along the Santa Fe Trail.

Bullet point the steps or events that lead to the independence of Texas. It will probably take you 8-10 bullet points.

8 Homework How did Texas win it’s independence? (give me details)
Read Chapter 10 Section 3. Answer questions 4, 6, and 7 on page 284. Read Chapter 10 Section 4. Answer questions 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 on page 291.

9 Moving West As Americans push into Texas, others look past the Rocky Mountains. Fur traders go first. Discover N.A. trails through the mountains – Oregon Trail. What threatened those moving west? Quote pg. 284. Why have N.A. been portrayed as hostile?

10 Annexation of Texas Manifest destiny?
What is the problem with adding Texas? America does annex Texas and relations with Mexico deteriorate. President Polk wants more than Texas. Offers to buy California and N. Mexico for 30 Million.

11 War with my people! Polk sends troops to the Rio Grande, debate with Nueces River. Mexican troops attack. Polk has his war. American forces conquer Mexico city. Also American settlers attack Mexican forces in California and declare it a republic.
