1 Chapter 1 Notes Introduction to Chemistry Pages 3-23 in textbook
Chemistry Period 1, 2, 7 Chapter 1 Notes Introduction to Chemistry Pages 3-23 in textbook

2 Section 1.1 What is Chemistry? (p. 3)
Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes matter undergoes. Matter is what makes up everything. It is otherwise defined as something with both mass and volume. Here are some examples of matter the changes it undergoes

3 Branches of Chemistry (page 4)
Organic Chemistry: 2nd year college chemistry. Organic chemistry is the study of matter that contains carbon Inorganic Chemistry: 1st year college chemistry. Inorganic chemistry is the study of matter that does not contain carbon. Analytical Chemistry: Study of what substances are made of. Biochemistry: Chemistry of living things. For example chemistry of breathing, digestion, etc..

4 Chapter 1 Notes Part B Chapter 1 Notes Part B

5 Examples A) Materials: What did people mix thousands of years ago? What are chemists “tailoring” now? (p. 7) B) Energy: There are only two ways to provide energy, what are they? (p. 8) C) Medicine and Biotechnology: Many medicines are effective because they…? (p.10) D) Agriculture: Studies in photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation has lead to what? (p. 11) E) Chemists work with environmental scientists to? (p. 12) F) Astronomy and Space Exploration: What did scientists learn from analyzing light transmitted to earth? (p. 14)

6 Chapter 1 Notes Part C

7 Section 1.3 The Scientific Method
The scientific method is a logical approach to the solution of scientific problems. Observation: Use your own senses to obtain information Hypothesis: Proposed reason for hypothesis Experiment: Test of hypothesis Theory/Conclusion: Explanation of why experiments give certain results

8 Section 1.3 The Scientific Method
Control group: Group not being experimented with independent variable Independent Variable: What is being changed in experiment Dependent Variable: What changes based on independent variable
