10 Lesson Title: ‘Analysing Map and Photo Extracts for Revision’
Learning Objectives To extract and analyse information from maps and photographs Identify and understand processes and activities occurring on a coastline by studying map extracts Engage with Practicing a key revision skill; how to ‘extend annotations’ useful for any extracts e.g. photos/maps/graphs/figures

11 Learning Outcomes All will know how to annotate map and photo extracts
All will understand some erosional processes and tourist activities found in the extracts Most will have developed skills in justifying personal decisions for coastal management strategies Some will have developed skills in judging the validity of other choices for coastal management strategies

12 “What do we need to do when analysing map extracts?”
So far in Geography we have been looking at ‘Managing Places in the 21st Century’ and you will soon be examined on Managing Coastal Environments. It is likely you will be asked questions which require you to analyse certain “extracts” for example a Map or a Photo So in this instance we want to be able to: Identify and label Characteristics and Features in an extract e.g. Photo of Swanage, Sea Arch Annotate potential processes and activities that may be taking place in the photo or map e.g. Longshore Drift, Overcrowding Look ahead and annotate possible Impacts that these processes and activities may have on the environment, whether they are positive or negative impacts e.g. Replenishing beaches down drift of location, Litter Pollution Offer management solutions to any problematic processes or activities identified in the extract e.g. construct wooden Groynes, ban tourists during nesting season ...etc

13 Task 1) Map Extract showing Erosional Processes and Landforms (10mins) Study these maps: As a class, annotate... 1) All of the characteristics and features of this stretch of coastline e.g. Location, physical/human features 2) All of the erosional and weathering processes that may be occurring on this stretch of coastline 3) Extend annotation 2 with reasons why these processes may be occurring here 4) Extend annotation 3 with any Positive and Negative impacts of the processes on this stretch of coastline 5) Potential sea defences that could be used on this Coastline with a reason why Example of extending annotations: 2) Subaerial weathering on the headland cliff tops 3) The headland is made of hard rock which slowly erodes to leave exposed cliff faces 4) Negative Impact is that weathering can result in rock fall from cliff faces which may be dangerous for people below 5) Rip Rap or rock armour can be placed at the foot of the cliffs. To reduce force of hydraulic action. 1) South West Coast Path, good walking route

14 Task 2) Map Extract of a Fragile Coastal Environment (10mins) Study these maps: As a class, annotate... 1) All of the characteristics of this stretch of coastline e.g. Location, physical/human features 2) All of the commercial and recreation activities that may be possible on this stretch of coastline 3) Extend annotation 2 with reasons why these activities may be possible here 4) Extend annotation 3 with Positive and Negative impacts of the activities on this stretch of coastline 5) Management strategies used on this Fragile Coastal Environment Example of extending annotations: 4) Positive Impact is that scientists can study the biodiversity of the reef for medicines 2) Scuba Diving is possible here, this can be a recreational activity 3) Possible because small commercial businesses take tourists out on boats from nearby harbours and may rent out diving equipment. 5) Wardens can enforce laws to make it illegal to take souvenirs 4) Negative Impact is that tourists could break off small parts of the reef for ‘souvenirs’ whish can harm the fragile ecosystem 1) Coastal Roads , good transport links

15 Summary Part 1) Follow up Questions
In your exercise books, Individually answer these two exam style questions, (remember a mark a minute) this will take you 10minutes Q1) Suggest the level of sea defence Swanage should receive. Justify your answer using evidence from your map (5marks) Reminder: Justifying = Explaining why you chose what you did and secondly explaining why its better than other options. Q2) How might the Great Barrier Reef be used sustainably for recreation and leisure? Use evidence from your map to support your answer (5marks)

16 “How do we analyse a map extract?”
Summary Part 2 “How do we analyse a map extract?” On your post it note write down at least 3 essential things you should do when analysing a map extract - 1min GO! The snowball effect... One at a time I will ask you “How do we analyse a map extract?” and you have to recite everything that the previous people have said... then add something else you can think of...! Next lesson: Mock Exam before half term.
