1 A Bloody Conflict Chapter 14 Section 3

2 Combat in WWI Terrible destruction resulted in WWI from the combination of old fashioned strategies and new technologies.

3 Trench Warfare What was Trench Warfare? What was “no man’s land”?

4 New Technology Poison Gas Tanks Airplanes New Kinds of Guns

5 Poison Gas Germans first used this.
Fumes caused vomiting, blindness, and suffocation. Gas masks became necessary soon after this became used commonly.

6

7 Tanks Introduced by British in 1916.
At first were very slow, mechanically unreliable, and fairly easy to destroy. Used to roll over barbed wire and trenches.

8

9 Airplanes First used to observe enemy activities.
Then used to drop small bombs. Then used in air battles known as dogfights.

10 Zeppelins Used mostly for large bombings and reconnaissance.
Filled with either Hydrogen or Helium.

11 German Howitzer Also known as “Big Bertha.”
It was about 20 feet tall and weighed nearly 96,000 pounds. Firing range of 7.7 miles. It’s shell weighed nearly 1,807 pounds.

12 Russia Leaves the War Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevik Party, pulled Russia out of the war. This came after Lenin overthrew the government and established a Communist government. In the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, Russia lost territory to Germany, including Ukraine, its Polish and Baltic territories, and Finland.

13 The War rages on The Germans worked desperately to push through allied lines. One of their main objectives was to capture the city of Paris, which they came close to doing, but in the end, could not.

14 The War Ends In November of 1918, Germany signed an armistice, which is a cease fire. There would now have to be a process to come up with a treaty to decide the fate of the countries involved.

15 Peace Conference After WWI ended, a peace conference was held in Paris to try and resolve the issues of the war ending. The main people involved were the “Big Four.” Who were the Big Four?

16 Fourteen Points A plan presented by President Wilson
It proposed to eliminate the causes of the war. It also wanted the Central Powers to leave all areas they invaded during the war. Wilson also called for a league of nations.
