13 SAE 6906 Background In 2012, the DoD established the HSI Standard Working Group. In 2016, SAE International was selected to develop the DoD HSI Best Practices Standard. DoDD and DODI require the services to “plan for and implement HSI beginning early in the acquisition process and through the product life cycle”. The purpose of the DoD HSI Best Practice Standard is to define for industry what is required to conduct an HSI program. An accompanying Handbook is being developed by the DoD to define the HSI program for procuring agencies. The Standard will be used by the DoD to contract HSI programs for upcoming procurements. Senior panel review this summer.

SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT COUNCIL (SMC) The role of the SMC is oversight and management of the SAE SMC Standards program as defined by the TSB. The Council has three primary roles in managing the SMC Standards work of SAE: Dealing with the standardization impacts of strategic issues confronting multiple industries, responding appropriately to needs for Technical Standards for reference in regulation, in acquisition, in safety, and many other areas Responding to direction from the TSB and the SAE Board of Directors Responsible for management and oversight of the Technical Committees including improving processes, improving products, ensuring industry needs are addressed and that the Technical Committees are being responsive to industry concerns.

23 Wolf J. Hebenstreit Second Chair of G-45
Wolf-Ulrich J. Hebenstreit passed away at his home in Bellevue, Washington on September 14, He was 87 years old. Wolf was born on March 27, 1930 in Zwickau, Germany, the second of five children born to Dr. Wolfgang Otto Georg Hebenstreit and Hildegard Katherine Goebel. As a teenager during World War II he served in a hospital unit caring for wounded soldiers. After the war, Wolf enrolled in the University of Heidelberg where he studied medicine and received his undergraduate degree. In 1953, he immigrated to America and later earned his Master of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of Washington. AMS-STD-595

24 Wolf J. Hebenstreit Wolf joined Boeing in July of 1959, beginning a 34-year career of dedicated service. In 1963, he was selected for the company's doctoral leave program and completed his course work at the University of Washington. Wolf was a pioneer in the application of human factors to the design of military and commercial aircraft cockpits during his time at Boeing, lobbying to improve aircraft safety and functionality. He was also instrumental in establishing the Human Factors Technology Advisory Group with the Navy and Department of Defense. AMS-STD-595

25 Wolf J. Hebenstreit In retirement, Wolf focused on the things he loved the most. An avid traveler, he visited Europe several times, and we have fond memories of a family trip to his hometown. He loved fine food and drink, reading, researching history, and listening to his extensive classical music collection. Wolf is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen, five children, Rolf, Tom, Heidi Brewer, Eric, and Kristen Bostick, and two grandsons who proudly share his name, Jackson Wolf Brewer and Nelson Wolf Bostick. He is also survived by siblings Malte Hebenstreit and Hildegard Penzel, and many other dear family members and friends. His intelligence, wit, and one-of-a-kind personality will be missed by all. AMS-STD-595

26 Wolf J. Hebenstreit Wolf chaired the EIA G-45 Human Factors Committee from 1986 until 1995, taking over from Art Kahn of Westinghouse. He was “huge” advocate of strengthening DOD HFE and HSI requirements. When asked what the government could do better, his classic response was “Put it in the contract!” He turned over the committee to Steve Merriman in 1995. AMS-STD-595
