Estrogen Carly Hughes February Anatomy

2 Estrogen What is Estrogen? Estrogen is a hormone that comprises a group of compounds, including estrone, estradiol and estriol. It is the main sex hormone in women and is essential to the menstrual cycle. Estrogen is found in men as well as in women, it is just found in higher amounts in women especially women who can reproduce.

3 Risk Factors Some risk factors of too much estrogen could result in endometrial cancer. Which is cancer lining the uterus or womb. If your body doesn’t produce enough estrogen and you have to take estrogen shots. Your supposed to take progestin with it. You may have a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots in the lungs or legs, breast cancer, and dementia.

4 How Does This Hormone Affect Your Fertility?
Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are one of the main factors driving a woman’s fertility. If you have low estrogen levels or estrogen deficiency, which can reduce fertility among other negative side effects. The side of effects of having low estrogen levels could result in hot flashes, night sweats, and headaches.

5 The Role Of Estrogen In Women
The estrogenic hormones are uniquely responsible for the growth and development of female sexual characteristics and reproduction in human and animals. Estrogen is produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat tissue. The estradiol and estrone forms are produced primarily in the ovaries in premenopausal in women, while estriol is produced in the placenta during pregnancy. Estrogen circulates in the bloodstream and binds to estrogen receptors on cells targeted in tissues, affecting not only breasts and uterus, but also in the brain, bone, liver and other tissues.

6 How Estrogen Affect Bones?
Healthy bones in men and women requires estrogen! Estrogen helps bones absorbs calcium needed for strength. Because muscles require calcium to contract, if there is not enough calcium in the blood, the body will take it from the bones. In men, estrogen is more important for their bone health.

7 Estrogen Receptor

8 Does smoking increase or decrease estrogens levels?
Some people say that marijuana increases estrogen levels. In the book, The Geography of the Female body the author states that smoking marijuana increases estrogen levels especially in women because it causes multiple orgasms. Although smoking cigarettes, can cause deformed sperm and damage DNA. Men who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day have an extra 42 percent chance of fathering a child who contracts cancer. Smoking also diminishes sperm count and reduces the blood flow to the penis, sometimes causing impotence.

9 Estrogen therapy

10 Some structural changes induced by estrogen…
promote formation of female secondary sex characteristics decelerate height growth accelerate metabolism (burn fat) reduce muscle mass stimulate endometrial growth increase uterine growth increase vaginal lubrication thicken the vaginal wall maintenance of vessel and skin reduce bone resorption, increase bone formation

12 Conclusion!!!! In this power point, you have learn about Estrogen, some affects of it, risk factors, the role estrogen plays in men and women, and some structural changes caused by it. Estrogen is an important hormone in women and not to have it would cause a lot of issues.
