‘Because there is suffering in the world God cannot exist.’ Do you agree? Learning Objective: To plan a written response to our key question, ‘Because there is suffering in the world God cannot exist.’ Do you agree? To reflect on our P4C from last lesson To plan a written response To form an opening sentence for our written piece

2 P4C Reflection Disagree Agree
Think back to your thoughts from our P4C last lesson. Write down your killer thought in answer to our key question and place it on the appropriate place on the continuum line. ‘Because there is suffering in the world God cannot exist.’ Do you agree? Students need to summarise their thoughts on a post it note and put their name on it. They then need to come up to the board and place their post it note on the continuum line. Read some post it notes out to remind students of some of the arguments from the discussion. Disagree Agree

3 Assessment Next lesson you are going to be writing a response to our key question and this will be your assessment for this unit and will be marked with a Wildern Step. ‘Because there is suffering in the world God cannot exist.’ Do you agree?

4 How to write a quality answer
Start with a statement of the issue you are discussing – ‘Because there is suffering in the world God cannot exist.’ Do you agree? Summarise or outline the main arguments. Provide arguments to support one side of the case. Give examples and evidence. Provide arguments to support the opposing view. Give examples and evidence. Come to a conclusion about which side you recommend. Use the present tense and usually the third person. You may use rhetorical questions, e.g. Is this fair? Use connectives to contrast and compare, e.g. however. Tend to use general terms rather than specific ones, e.g. ‘many people suggest that…’

5 To make progress you need to act on your targets!!!
Target Logs Before we start planning our answers, open up your target logs and read your targets from the Resurrection Detectives unit so you know what you need to be working on this time. To make progress you need to act on your targets!!!

6 Planning Now we need to plan our own piece of writing.
You need to consider: Arguments you will use on both sides Evidence and examples you will use Your own opinion When students are planning make sure they have a copy of the mark scheme in front of them. Talk through this.

7 Modelling Writing Model the writing process for students – write on the board how you would begin your piece of writing. Highlight and verbalise what you are doing, e.g. adding punctuation, choosing a connective, editing your work to make it sound better. Save your piece of writing e.g. take a picture of it ready to use next lesson.
