1 Microsoft OneNote By: Lindsey W. Stephens

2 OneNote What is OneNote?
Computer program to gather information in a free-form A place to gather notes (handwritten or typed), drawings, screen clippings, as well as multi-use collaboration Notes can be shared over the Internet or network Available as part of the Microsoft Office suite Also available for free as a stand-alone application for the following: Windows, Mac, Windows RT, Windows Phone, IOS, Android and Symbian A web-based version is also available as part of OneDrive or Office Online and enables users to edit notes via a web browser

3 Cobb County School District Technology Mission:
Technology, as an integral part of curriculum, instruction, assessment and learning, prepares students to succeed in a global community. Our students will be equipped with twenty-first century technology skills to demonstrate, apply and communicate their learning. College and career ready graduates must have these skills.

4 Cobb County School District Technology Vision:
Technology serves as a tool to engage students in quality learning experiences requiring higher-order thinking skills to solve authentic problems. Students will use next generation technology tools to access, analyze and apply increasingly complex information to draw conclusion and make informed decisions. Students learning will be enhanced through open access and equitable distribution of online communication tools and information resources. Students and teachers will be technologically literate and will model responsible digital citizenship through the ethical use of information. Students and teachers will use technology to extend learning beyond the classroom and the school day.

5 Vision Continued… Students will use technology to connect and collaborate with classmates, educators, and experts around the world. Students, teachers, and educational leaders will use technology to assess, monitor, analyze, and report student performance data immediately to inform instructional planning and provide timely targeted feedback to students and teachers. Students will use rigorous online and blended learning opportunities including Cobb Virtual Academy and Georgia Virtual School to succeed academically. Technology will improve communication between district stakeholders, ensuring that students, parents, teachers, administrators, support personnel, board members, and community members receive relevant information. All district personnel will use technology to maximize and personalize their professional learning. Federal, state, and local funding sources will be maximized to support professional learning in the effective integration of technology into curriculum, instruction, and assessment

6 How Would This Technology Support the Technology Vision for the Schools in Cobb County?
OneNote will provide: Gives students a digital space to store notes, research, data, etc. Easy access to information stored in the space because of the versatility of the software (access basically anywhere, and it is free via a web- browser) Enables students to collaborate easily with peers both inside and outside of the classroom

7 Objective To provide students with a way to organize their information and notes throughout their school career Help build collaboration amongst their peers as well as collaboration with others outside of their class Provide students opportunity to record audio, take snapshots of notes from the board in class, or hand-draw charts and save them all in one place digitally Give students the opportunity to organize everything into an electronic portfolio to take with them after graduating

8 Grade Level & Equitable Access
OneNote would be great for students in grade 9-12 This is the time when they are really needing to keep up with their work and notes Students are taking multiple core subject classes, as well as electives, so this would be a great way to begin organized and stay organized throughout the duration of their high school career! In order to secure equitable access: Students are able to bring their own devices to use for educational purposes, so the teacher would enable the students to use these devices which could include: cell phone (download the free application), tablets (I-Pads), as well as laptops Students can also have access to OneNote in the computer labs as well as the library Cobb county has purchased a subscription for all students beginning this upcoming school year, so as long as the student has access to a computer of some sort, they will be able to use OneNote!

9 Equipment & Software Needed
In order for students to use OneNote, the following equipment will be needed: Computer (laptop or desktop) Smartphone Tablet or IPad Software As stated before, OneNote has a web-based version which is free At this time, Cobb County School District has purchased access to the Microsoft Office 365 suite, therefore all students have free access to the software, and can create up to a certain amount of login’s Therefore, access to the software would not be an issue for any student with internet access

10 Technical Support OneNote provides online Technical Support via the link Installation of the application has already been completed, so all Cobb County School District computers will have the software already installed Students (along with their parents, and with their permission) will create their login and begin using

11 Limitations & Cost of OneNote
As stated before, OneNote has already been purchased for students, parents and teachers to have access to, after creating their login There is no cost to current students and staff of Cobb County School District If a student does not have any of the pieces of equipment listed on the “equipment” slide (smartphone, computer, tablet/Ipad), this would be a limitation, as the student would not have unlimited access But, as a solution, students could access OneNote via the Internet at a public library, or in the school library

12 How can OneNote be used in the classroom?
Teachers can use OneNote to: Enhance productivity of students Create assessment tools Stay organized Keeping everything in one spot Deliver curriculum Innovative tools to deliver content in a variety of ways Create interactive lessons Opportunities to interact with your students to check for understanding along the way Collaborate in the classroom One-on-one collaboration that is sometimes harder to accomplish without these tools Collaborate with other teachers Share data, notes, research without “clogging” up with sending attachments!

13 Effectiveness of OneNote in the Classroom:
According to “OneNote 2013 is the best hidden secret in Office, a note taking application that’s easy to use, organized like a paper notebook and crammed with features.” According to “The service allows teachers to set up OneNote accounts that are synced online using Office 365 and SharePoint Online. Students use the “notebooks” for all of their classwork and teachers can access them at any time to check their progress. Learners also have access to a resource center, where teachers are able to upload all of the documents related to their lectures and assignments.”

14 Implementation of OneNote
I have already been trained on the use of OneNote via a Professional Learning opportunity Cobb County School District made available for Career Technology teachers. I believe this sort of setting would be the best way for teachers to become familiar with all of the tools. It is very overwhelming at first, but sitting in the class with the instructors that are available to come and work with you one-on-one was very beneficial to learning all of the tools. This Professional Learning class was a couple hours at night after school, and was held at a local high school. If enough teachers at one location were to sign up for the opportunity, I believe it wouldn’t be necessary to commute to a different location. The CBAM model would be best, I believe, for the implementation of OneNote. This would provide not only the tools, but the opportunity for teachers to understand OneNote, and use it effectively!

15 Reflection of OneNote In years past, I have always been a loyal “GoogleDocs” user, but always came across several issues. Most of the issues of using Google to store my documents for my classes were based on whether or not I had internet access. We all know that sometimes the Internet just stops working at random times, so if I did not have the file saved somewhere else, I had to think quickly to re-direct my students to another activity. When the Professional Learning opportunity presented itself via an , I was quick to sign-up. I really wanted to learn about other ways to organize my documents and have access to them at any time! OneNote was one of the applications that was taught in that class, and I am thankful I was able to learn all of the tools available.

16 Reflection Continued…
Now that the software is on our computers, I will no longer need to worry about whether the internet will suddenly stop. OneNote is a great tool for not only teachers to use in the classroom on a daily basis, but the students will be able to use it to stay organized and create electronic portfolios of their work throughout school! In the upcoming weeks prior to school starting, I plan to transfer all of my files for all of my classes over from GoogleDocs to OneNote, and will encourage my students to use the software as well. I am also hoping the county, or each school will offer the same Professional Learning opportunity I was given to other staff members!
