2. Mg Atomic number = 12 Atomic mass = 24.305
Number of protons is the same as atomic number.
Number of electrons is the same as protons.
The number of neutrons found by subtracting the atomic number from the rounded atomic mass.
24 – 12 = 12 Mg
Magnesium
The number of shells is determined by the period the element is in. Magnesium is in period three, so it has three shells/energy levels.
Shell 1 has 2 (maximum)
Shell 2 has 8 (8 maximum)
Shell 3 has 2 (Outer shell cannot have more then 8 electrons.
Protons = 12
Neutrons = 12
Electrons = 12
