1 Adaptations Grade 5

2 Structure Part that does a “job” for the organism
What job do wings have in birds? Flight What job do an owl’s massive eyes have? See in the dark

3 Which beak is best for collecting nectar from this flower?

4 Which set of feet is best for collecting catching this fish?

5 And sometimes they grab other things…

6 Structure Part that does a “job” for the organism Pitcher Plants
Have sap that disintegrates and digests flies that enter them So the plant can eat them!

7 Cactus and Roses: What do they have in common?
Thorns protect from predators

8 Function The “job” that the structure performs
Look at the trunk of an elephant! Helps them grab things Helps them reach leaves in high places

9 Structure and Function: Plants
Leaves Photosynthesis Convert light energy into sugar that the plant uses for daily functions Stems Holds the leaves up toward light Also can carry out photosynthesis Transports nutrients to leaves Roots Absorb nutrients from soil Nitrogen, minerals, water

10 Structure and Function: Plants

11 Structure and Function: Plants

12 Adaptation A change that an organism makes to better survive in its environment Example: Fish have fins so the can swim! What else do fish have to help them survive under water?

13 Adaptations Occur over a long period of time Millions of years
Natural selection This means the animal that is best fit to survive will win and continue onward to reproduce Animals that are not adapted may not survive to reproduce

14 What are some examples of adaptations in animals?
Fins Wings Gills Claws Camouflage Color Mimics

15 What happened???

16 What adaptations do you see?

17 Structure and Function: Animals
Consider the tree frog Sticky toes for climbing

18 What adaptations do you see?

19 Butterflies Long tongue called a PROBISCUS
Shaped like a straw so they can drink nectar from flowers Curls up when not in use

20 What adaptations do you see?

21 Albinos Albino means the animal is born without pigment
Generally appear white with red eyes Do you think an animal that is all white is going to survive easily in the environment?

22 What adaptations do you see?

23 Anglerfish Very cool adaptations!

24 The End! Or is it?
