1 OpenWIS contribution to WIS
Matteo dell’Acqua Deputy Director Information Systems

2 Agenda OpenWIS overview OpenWIS Consortium
Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

3 OpenWIS project : Project started in 2009
4 National Met Services and 1 service provider to build a common software offering GISC, DCPC and NC functions Open Source Interoperable standard Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

4 OpenWIS: an Open Source software
Based on open-source components Development and integration sub-contracted to IT company 370 requirements in ITT Technology : Java, Linux, Web services guaranteed to be maintained and sustained by Partners Evolutions managed by the partners Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

5 OpenWIS features Versatile
Fulfil the function of GISC, DCPC, NC by parameterisation Allowing a variety of deployment strategies to meet local constraints (security, federation of centres, …) Fully interoperable based on international standard (ISO, OGC,…) Robust (7/24), internal redundancy, backup mechanisms between centres Modular Portable Fit for now, scalable for the future Adaptable: Look and feel GUI Generic interface / Harness to fit to local interface of your own Information System Possible reuse of software component (public data portal / SESAR programme…) Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

6 OpenWIS functions A unique software to fulfil GISC, DCPC or NC functions Single Entry point to met information Maintain and publish catalogues and metadata Discovery and search data, access and download Synchronise metadata with other Centre Routine data exchange Supply data on request Subscription to services Manage users & data policy Maintain 24h cache of data Interface to internal systems (Data Centre) Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012 6

15 OpenWIS Consortium

16 OpenWIS® consortium Creation of a non-for-profit entity gathering all members or partners Driven by OpenWIS steering committee: chair appointed for 2 years OpenWIS steering committee decide on the software policy Different status for members OpenWIS® Founders: limited to initial 5 organizations OpenWIS® Strategic Partners: NMS or public organizations OpenWIS® Associate Partners: NMS or public organizations OpenWIS® User Members: any NMS or public organization using OpenWIS in its operational suite. With different privileges In addition, individuals or organisations may contribute to the development of OpenWIS®. Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

17 Privileges of OpenWIS members
Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

18 OpenWIS software management
Steering Committee vote on software evolutions, and manage the software management team The Software management team will be a compact team of experts in charge of software integration, preparation of new releases, etc. Software contributors will contribute to OpenWIS main line only after approval from Steering Committee; they can originate from OpenWIS Founders or from any contributing member Support services on OpenWIS software may be rendered by a wider community, including OpenWIS software management team and software contributors Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

19 Why join OpenWIS® Consortium ?
Shared cost Reduced cost of development because of open source approach Fully operational and mature system ready for WIS operation Fully interoperable inside and outside meteorology Better basis for accelerating pace of change Data format neutral Can implement a variety of data policies, determined by metadata Offers route out of traditional WMO technologies Long term support assured Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012

20 Summary Contact : Interoperable standard Open Source
Mature system operational in France and UK and pre-operational in Australia, Korea and Russia Sustained by the OpenWIS Consortium Open to new partners Contact : Matteo Dell’Acqua – Météo France Chris Little – MetOffice Weiqing Qu – BoM Sunghoi Huh - KMA Seoul WIS Workshop, Jeju, 6-9 November 2012
