4 How did the colonist create their governments?
Charter A legal document that grants land to a person or company to start a colony on that land Every colony had their own government Main goals: Protection from Britain Protection from colonial government

5 5 Rules of Good Government
Natural Rights: government should protect people’s natural rights to life, liberty and property Representative Government: the people elect representatives to the legislature Rule of Law: created a government of laws that all colonists had to obey Separation of Powers: executive, legislative, judicial Checks and Balances: all branches of government put different limits on one another
