2 Greensburg, Kansas Located in Southwest Kansas.
Population- about 1574 as of 2000. About 1.5 square miles-all of it land. In “Tornado Alley”( area of the Midwest where tornados most often occur)

3 Before it hit… Over a three day period ( May 4th through 6th) A total of 123 tornados were confirmed during the tornado outbreak. 25 tornados were confirmed on the night of May 4th. A total of 84 were confirmed on May 5th in the same surrounding area. 14 more tornados were confirmed on May 6th. Tornado warnings rang out only 20 minutes before the Greensburg Tornado touched the ground.

5 How the tornados formed
The bad weather started when a powerful, slow-moving low pressure area with a warm front stalled over the Nebraska and Missouri region. Then with warm, moist air coming up from the Caribbean, the two air masses coming together created spinning in the atmosphere which created the many tornados that touched down on May 4th.

6 The Greensburg Tornado
The tornado hit at 9:45pm, May 4th 2007. Was about 1.7miles thick-wider than the city itself(1.5miles) Was on the ground for 30 minutes. Traveled 22 miles non-stop. Wind speeds about 205mph. Rated F5 on magnitude scale ( F0-F5,F5 the worst) Worst to touch down in 8 years.

7 The Aftermath… Within hours after the tornado lifted, Greensburg was determined unsafe and was fully evacuated. A dusk-dawn curfew was established after the tornado hit.

8 The Damage… One of the only standing buildings after the tornado hit.
(The S.D. Robinett Building) 95% of the town was leveled, the other 5% was severely damaged. All the damage cost around $153 million dollars.

9 Deaths Killed 12 people all between the ages of 46 and 84 years old.
Injured at least 60 people.

10 Greensburg Today… The city’s power is now generated by wind turbines.
It is also now called the “green city”.
