1 (8th) Chapter 14-2 Cornell Notes
The Sun

2 Chapter 14-2 Cornell Notes
1. Why does the Sun have such strong gravity? Key Questions Why do sunspots look darker? Clue: think of temperature.

3 Chapter 14-2 Cornell Notes
nuclear fusion- core- radiation zone- convection zone- photosphere- chromosphere- corona- solar wind- sunspot- prominence- solar flare- Key Terms

4 Chapter 14-2 Cornell Notes Heading 1
Energy from the Sun Sun’s mass 99.8 % of the solar system; Sun’s energy from nuclear fusion in the core; hydrogen atoms combine to form helium; Inner pressure balanced by weight of the sun.

5 Chapter 14-2 Cornell Notes Heading 2
The Sun’s Interior Sun doesn’t have a surface; Sun’s interior: core, radiation zone, convection zone; core: heat and light produced; radiation zone: middle zone, tightly packed gas, electromagnetic radiation; convection zone: outer layer, hot and cooler gases circulate.

6 Chapter 14-2 Cornell Notes Heading 3
The Sun’s Atmosphere Sun’s atmosphere: photosphere, chromosphere, corona; photosphere: inner layer, gives off visible light; chromosphere: middle layer, reddish glow during eclipse: corona: fainter glow, sends out charged particles called the “solar wind”.

7 Chapter 14-1 Cornell Notes Heading 4
Features on the Sun Sun’s features: sunspots, prominences, solar flares; sunspots: dark spots from cooler T; prominences: loops of gas, sometimes gives out great energy (E); solar flare: prominences escaping into space; can add to solar wind.
