6 Each flag has colors and symbols that mean something important.

7 For instance, here is the United States flag
For instance, here is the United States flag. When our country first declared its independence, there were 13 states.  That's why the U.S. flag has 13 red and white stripes. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

8 Now there are 50 states and that is why there are 50 stars on the blue part of the flag.

10 Now let's look at some other flags and what their symbols mean.

11 This is the flag for the country of Grenada
This is the flag for the country of Grenada.   The red border stands for unity and harmony.  The yellow stars stand for sunshine because it is a hot country. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

12 The green stands for farms and fields
The green stands for farms and fields.  The picture of the nutmeg is on the flag because the country has many types of spices.   Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

Here is the flag for the country of Kuwait.  The green stripe stands for the land.  The black field stands for the war that was fought for the freedom of the country. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

16 The yellow diamond stands for Brazil's wealth and gold
The yellow diamond stands for Brazil's wealth and gold.  The blue represents the sky in its most important city, Rio de Janeiro. "Order and Progress" is the country's motto. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

Other flags show famous buildings or palaces.  This is the flag for the country of Cambodia which features Angkor Wat, a famous Hindu temple in the country. Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

20 Today we want you and your partner to design a flag for our city
Today we want you and your partner to design a flag for our city.  It should have symbols on it and they should stand for something! Copyright Right Brain Curriculum

21 Then we will vote on which flag will be our city's official flag
