1 Five Themes of Canadian History

2 Globalization Globalization refers to the dependent and interdependent relationships between places on earth.

3 Globalization Question: What has been Canada’s place in the community of nations and what should Canada’s role be? (e.g. Peopling of the Americas, Contact, the World Wars)

4 Development Development looks at how Canada and Canadians have evolved to meet the needs and wants of Canada’s peoples. With the resources available to them.

5 Development Questions: How has the Canadian economy evolved in an attempt to meet the needs and wants of all Canada’s peoples? (e.g. National Policy and free trade)

6 Governance Governance is the process by which a group a people establish a system that enables them to live together in an organized and cooperative society. (Federal, Provincial, municipal, companies, organization, clubs, families).

7 Governance Question: Have governments in Canada, past and present, been reflective of Canadian societies? (e.g. First Nations governing, colonialism, Confederation and constitutional issues)

8 Justice Many people immediately equate it with the law – the legal or justice system. For others, the word “justice” may more naturally bring to mind the word fairness.

9 Question: How has Canada struggled for a just and fair society?

10 Independence in exercising power and authority.

11 Sovereignty Question: How have struggles for sovereignty defined Canada and how do they continue to define Canada? (e.g. First Nations self-government, Quebec independence
