9 SCIENTIFIC METHOD The Scientific Method involves a framework (series of steps) that are used to investigate a natural occurrence. Steps Observe a Problem/ Ask a Question Research Formulate a Hypothesis Experiment Collect Data and Analyze Results Conclusion Communicate the Results

10 SCIENTIFIC METHOD Observe - (identify) a problem or seek an explanation Ask a question – Identify an aspect of the phenomona you would like to investigate Formulate a hypothesis - an explanation to a question or problem (educated guess) that can be tested Conduct an experiment to collect data Experiment: an investigation that tests a hypothesis Experiments involve A control group: the part of the experiment that receives no experimental treatment An experimental group: The part of the experiment that receives experimental treatment In experiments, only one condition is changed at a time an independent variable: the condition that is tested a dependent variable: the condition that changes due to the independent variable and is measured Provide steps necessary for another researcher(s) to replicate experiment

Data: information obtained from an investigation (measurements, observations, etc.) Types of data Quantitative – numbers, data which can be measured Qualitative - descriptions, observed but cannot be measured The data is analyzed in order to make conclusions Form or questions a theory Theory: a hypothesis that is supported by a large body of evidence Can lead to make an inference Inference: a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning
