1. NHS reservists Background
The government is committed to increasing the number of reservists within the UK Armed Forces by 2019.
What this means for NHS organisations:
- That a member of your team becomes or already is a reservist.
- That your reservists will have training and, when required, a mobilisation commitment.
- That your reservists will gain additional skills and experiences by taking part in their reserve training and operational duties.

2. NHS reservists What this means for your employees
Reservist employees
- Are required to attend training with their local unit, usually outside of working hours
- Will learn a wealth of new skills
- May be mobilised during the course of their reserve service
Non-reservist employees
- Can benefit from the knowledge and training given to their reservist colleagues
- Can experience the reservist’s military training through taking part in an ‘executive stretch’ event with their local reservist unit
Usually, training takes place on evenings and weekends
The annual camp can take place at home or abroad, lasting two weeks, during which reservist employees must be away from work
If an employee is mobilised, there is a lot of information for both the employer and your reservist employee on the NHS Employers and the Defence Relationship Management websites
The wealth of skills gained by reservists during training and mobilisation can be transferred to their team in their organisation
There are also opportunities for non-reservists to get involved in military-style teambuilding events – ask your line manager to find out more
