2 Prayer Today we celebrate the sacredness of all God’s people. We are created sacred and reflect the image of God, And we are called to respect the same dignity in others. Creator God, we praise you and thank you for wonderfully creating each of us. Help us to see each other and ourselves as sacred and holy. May we always recognize the dignity and worth of every person, and may we treat all with deep respect, through your Son Jesus. Amen

6 Student Task: Using the internet find a definition of ‘dignity’ and then, incorporating your understanding of the bible, create a definition of human dignity to use for this unit. Write it in your books.

9 What does the Church say?
Being in the image of God the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone. He is capable of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with other persons. And he is called by grace to a covenant with his Creator, to offer him a response of faith and love that no other creature can give in his stead. (From the Catechism of the Catholic Church #357)

10 What does the Church say?
Freedom is exercised in relationships between human beings. Every human person, created in the image of God, has the natural right to be recognized as a free and responsible being. All owe to each other this duty of respect. The right to the exercise of freedom, especially in moral and religious matters, is an inalienable requirement of the dignity of the human person. This right must be recognized and protected by civil authority within the limits of the common good and public order. (From the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1738)
