3 Ancient Greek Architecture
First temples were simple and rectangular: Two columns at entrance. Columns around perimeter. Three column styles: Doric Ionic Corinthian

4 Ancient Greek Architecture
The Parthenon: Pericles ordered it built as a tribute to goddess Athena. Funding from Delian League. Phidias was sculptor in charge. Combined Doric columns with Ionic features: Columns are thinner at the top. Tip towards each other.

Proportion was a major design factor. Temple of Zeus at Olympia.

7 Ancient Greek Historians
Herodotus ( B.C.E.) Called “The Father of History”. Tried to record history with a “wide view”. Traveled a lot! (Went to Egypt.) Books called Researches. Most of his writings were about Persian wars.

8 Ancient Greek Historians
Thucydides ( B.C.E.) Well - known soldier/historian. Removed from command for failure in battle. Wrote about important speeches we know today. Criticized because he could not have heard all these speeches. His history ended before the war Probably died in war.

9 Review Questions! Who was known as “The Father of History”? 2. Name the three (3) types of Greek columns. 3. Why was the Parthenon built? (HINT: Think about who it was built for.)
