6 How do animal systems interact to regulate the body? Standard
PG 34H Essential Question   How do animal systems interact to regulate the body? Standard B.10A - describe the interactions that occur among systems that perform the functions of regulation, nutrient absorption, reproduction, and defense from injury or illness in animals

7 SYSTEMS INVOLVED DRAW ALL OF THIS REGULATION (control) Endocrine
Nervous Endocrine Skeletal Muscular DRAW ALL OF THIS

8 SKELETAL SYSTEM Main Parts: Bones Joints Ligaments (join bone to bone)
Tendons (join muscle to bone) Cartilage

9 SKELETAL SYSTEM Main Functions: Gives support & structure
Protects internal organs Helps you move

10

11 MUSCULAR SYSTEM Main Parts: Smooth muscle Cardiac (heart) muscle
involuntary movement Cardiac (heart) muscle Skeletal muscle voluntary movement

12 MUSCULAR SYSTEM Main Function: Moves your limbs & body
Moves food through the digestive tract Pumps the blood Constricts and dilates blood vessels to increase or decrease blood flow

13

14 NERVOUS & ENDOCRINE SYSTEMS
Function together to regulate the body through electrical & chemical signals

15 Wireless (Wifi) Internet
Wired Internet Wireless (Wifi) Internet

16 NERVOUS SYSTEM Main Parts: Brain Spinal cord Neurons (nerve cells)
Sensory organs

17 How It Works: “Wired” Chemical signals transmitted
between nerve cells or receptors turn into electrical impulses that travel along the neuron Quick, almost instant responses Reflexes happen before your brain knows what’s going on Short-term effects

18 Path of a Reflex A sensory neuron Carries the impulse To the spinal cord Where the impulse Is immediately Passed back through A motor neuron to Produce a response! Why is the brain bypassed?

19 ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Main Parts: Glands Hormones

20 ENDOCRINE SYSTEM How It Works: “Wireless”
Chemical signals (hormones) sent anywhere in the body Sent through the bloodstream Slow-acting responses Long-term effects

21 ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Consists of: Endocrine glands Release hormones into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemicals released in one part of the body that travel through the bloodstream and affect the activities of cells in other parts of the body.

22 Keep the level of glucose in the blood stable.
Gland Function Thyroid Body’s metabolism Pancreas Keep the level of glucose in the blood stable. Pituatary Secretes hormones that directly regulate many body functions and controls functions of other glands. Adrenal Releases Adrenaline in the body that helps prepare for and deal with stress. Ovaries Found in women that produce eggs. Also secrete estrogen and progesterone, which control ovulation and menstruation. Testes Found in men that produces sperm. Also secrete Testosterone to give the body its masculine characteristics.

23 The “Master Gland!” The The pituitary gland, located in the brain, is an important link between the endocrine and nervous systems. It is called the master gland because it produces hormones that control other glands.

24 DEBRIEF: Explain how the four systems (Nervous, Endocrine, Muscular, and Skeletal) work together to prevent injury if you touch a hot stove. The nervous & endocrine systems recognize the increased temperature, and send signals to the skeletal & muscular systems to move the body away from injury.
