14 People-First Language
Type of language that is aimed to avoid perceived and subconscious dehumanization when discussing people with disabilities. Basic idea is to impose a sentence structure that names the person first and the condition second i.e. disabled people vs. people with disabilities The speaker is expected to internalize the idea of a disability as a secondary attribute, not a characteristic of a person’s identity. People-first language first appeared in 1988 as a recommendation of advocacy groups in the United States As part of people-first language, using disabilities in a derogatory fashion is unacceptable. i.e. don’t use of retarded a substitute of lame, dumb, stupid, etc.

15 Strengths-Based Practices
A clear shift to seeing the potential in the individual/family Avoids labeling and assumes power in the individual to help themselves as well as casting service providers as partners rather than experts, authorities, initiators and directors of the change process. This shift means working with and facilitating rather than fixing, pointing to health rather than dysfunction, turning away from limiting labels and diagnosis to wholeness and well-being.

16 Strengths Based Practices: Core Principles
Absolute belief that every person has potential and it is their unique strengths and capabilities that will determine their story What we focus on becomes one’s reality – focus on strength, not labels – seeing challenges as capacity fostering The language we use creates our reality Belief that change is inevitable – all individuals have the urge to succeed, to explore the world around them and to make themselves useful to others and their communities Positive change occurs in the context of authentic relationships – people need to know someone cares and will be there unconditionally for them

17 Strengths Based Practices: Core Principles
Person’s perspective of reality is primary (their story) – we’re not the expert People have more confidence and comfort to journey to the future when they are invited to start with what they already know Capacity building is a process and a goal It is important to value differences and the essential need to collaborate – effective collaborative, inclusive and participatory process – “it takes a village…”
